Feelings – the primary way we rationalize what is happening to us.
Something happens – how do we respond ? -> feelings, then actions
Feelings are learnt from young age.
Children observe adults and infer that they should behave a certain way in a certain situation – monkey see monkey do – or the parents teach them how to respond and name their reactions by telling them how they feel.
It is the case the a certain response to a certain situation increased the survival of an individual and therefore they could reproduce and teach their children to react the same.
However, that is not necessarily the best response in our days, although it could have been the most economic one until the industrial revolution, at least, when the cases that people didn’t have time to think before acting was more often.
That last part is odd to say given that now we seem to have even less time to think before we act.
However, our current lack of time is artificial. There is no iminent danger – that case is rare. So we could take time to find an alternative response than the one we learnt from parents or society, through school and interaction with others. We just have to teach ourselves to take a breath before feeling anything.
Sounds easy ๐
